I wrote previously about bad behaviors in dogs, and there’s no better remedy to it than the good old exercise.
Most destructive behavior comes from a lack of sufficient physical and psychological challenge in dogs. So put on your running shoes and take your dog out for a forty-five minutes run. Everyday. If you are not the most athletic person in the neighborhood, use a skateboard, roller blades, bikes, whatever! My neighbor takes his Doberman out for a run while he’s on a motorbike. Of course, your dog needs to be properly trained to run next to you, but the point is: there is no excuse for laziness!
Some breeds need to run more than others: Jack Russells, Beagles, Weimereiners, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Daschunds, Lassa Apsos, Saint Bernards, Huskies, Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers and almost any working and herding breed. Huskies are crazy. I definitely can’t catch up with Koda (my Husky) so I usually let him run in front of me while I follow him with a bicycle. Don’t attempt this unless you are 100% sure your dog is definitely not going to run out of your sight. Also don’t try this if you aren’t confident that your dog would stop running and come back to you once beckoned.
If you’re really against any types of sports, then get a low energy dogs. Some breeds would do fine with just a walk. Just make a judgment on how calm your dog is after a walk. Never over-exercise your dog. My friend had an obese Pit Bull who died of a heart failure after a running session. Which again, emphasizes the need of regularly exercising your dogs.
Remember: if you don’t have time to exercise your dog, then don’t get a dog!
